Keyboard Only Challenge

The Teaching and Learning Center invites you to take our…Keyboard Only Challenge

May 16th is Global Accessibility Awareness Day. Are your readings and course materials accessible to students using screen reader software?

We invite you to find out on May 13 at 1PM.  Hide your mouse, install a screen reader like ChromeVox or Jaws, and see how long you can operate your computer using only your keyboard for input. We’ll reach out before the challenge with detailed instructions for how you can do this. You can take this challenge to:

  • Build empathy for students facing accessibility challenges
  • Familiarize yourself with the advantages and disadvantages of screen reader use
  • Identify opportunities to improve the design of online materials and electronic handouts

We also encourage you to review the webpage “Using Screen Readers in Canvas” to see examples of what it’s like to navigate a page with limited sight (or none at all). It includes design recommendations for how you can ensure your course is more navigable for all users.
